Surgery designed to remove excess fat and skin that accumulates in the upper or lower eyelids, one of the two conditions can also occur, that is, the excess is only fat or skin, therefore each case must be individualized.

What is Blepharoplasty surgery?

Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is used to correct excess skin and signs of aging on the eyelids. It can also be used in young people when they have prominent fatty bags on the eyelids.

When the excess skin of the upper eyelids is marked, it can reduce the visual field and compromise vision. In these cases, blepharoplasty, in addition to improving the aesthetics of the eyelids, recovers the visual field, improving vision.
How is blepharoplasty done?

Blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia. Incisions are made in the natural folds of the eyelids and through these the excess skin is removed and the deformities of the fat bags are corrected. Once this has been done, the wounds are closed.

It is important to mention that blepharoplasty is no longer a simple skin and fat resection procedure and is now a more elaborate procedure based on a greater knowledge of the changes of aging. In the last decade, particular importance has been given to the preservation of fat to avoid the sunken eyes that occur with traditional techniques. In the same way, today greater importance is given to restoring the support of the eyelid and the outer corner of the eye, which with aging tends to lean downwards, giving the look a sad appearance.
How is the recovery from blepharoplasty?

The swelling and ointment applied during surgery to protect your eyes may initially cause slight blurred vision. The pain is normally minimal, if you have significant pain you should notify your surgeon.

During the first postoperative day you should rest and apply ice.
Swelling and bruising occur to varying degrees and generally subside in 7 to 14 days.

Once the initial inflammation has subsided (between 7 to 14 days) you will be able to appreciate a significant change, however, keep in mind that the complete de-inflammation process usually takes about 6 weeks.

At the beginning, it is frequent that when waking up there is a greater swelling, for this reason it is recommended to sleep with two or three pillows.
